The Łódź Voivodeship hides many treasures worth discovering. One of them is Łowicz – a city with a rich history, known for its colorful paper cutouts, Corpus Christi processions, and long connections with the primates of Poland. What is worth seeing in Łowicz?

Łowicz is less than 30 km away from the Santa Natura Resort & SPA Hotel. So if you have come to stay with us longer and want to explore the area, it is a great destination for a day trip. What is worth seeing in Łowicz?

Łowicz Old Town and its unique urban layout

It is best to start sightseeing from the market square, which does not resemble a typical rectangular plaza with a town hall in the center. The Old Town of Łowicz has a unique triangular urban layout – one of the few of its kind in Poland. It’s worth taking a walk here and closely admiring the colorful townhouses and architectural details. In winter, the center is decorated with light illuminations, while in summer, colorful garlands and flower pots appear.

Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Nicholas

This is the most important monument in Łowicz – a monumental Baroque temple known as the "Masovian Wawel." It houses the tombs of the primates of Poland, including Cardinal Michał Radziejowski. It is worth visiting the interior, not only because of the beautiful decorations and altars but also because it is one of the most important places connected with the history of the Church in Poland. Next to the basilica stands the former Bishop's Palace – currently the seat of the diocesan museum with interesting collections of sacred art.

Museum in Łowicz and the open-air museum

If you want to get to know Łowicz culture better – with its famous striped costumes, paper cutouts, and folk traditions – be sure to visit the Museum in Łowicz, located in the former Jesuit college building right by the Old Market. It’s not only an ethnographic exhibition – there are also art exhibitions, city history displays, and interesting temporary exhibitions.

About 7 km from the center, in the village of Maurzyce, there is an open-air museum – a branch of the museum – with wooden cottages, a windmill, a tavern, and farmsteads from nearby villages. In summer, craft shows, folk picnics, and educational events take place there.

What is worth seeing? Corpus Christi procession in Łowicz

If you are in the area in June – check when Corpus Christi falls. Łowicz is famous for one of the most picturesque processions in Poland, listed on the national list of intangible cultural heritage. Participants wear traditional Łowicz costumes, and the whole event makes a huge impression. Even if you are not a fan of religious events, it is worth seeing this colorful procession at least once in your lifetime. Many people plan their visit to Łowicz around this holiday – at that time, the town is full of life, and folklore meets modernity.

Bridge over the Bzura River and Adam Mickiewicz Park

We also recommend a walk around the bridge over the Bzura River. The river divides the town into two parts and creates picturesque bends that look great all year round. Right by the bridge, you’ll also find Adam Mickiewicz Park – a peaceful place for a short walk, resting on a bench, or playing with children. There are also bike paths nearby – so you can take bikes and combine sightseeing with active relaxation.

Łowicz for families with children

For families with children, an additional attraction may be the mini zoo operating seasonally in the open-air museum and workshops organized by the museum – e.g., making paper cutouts or painting figures in the Łowicz style. Many places in the center are also child-friendly – with playgrounds and the peaceful atmosphere of the town. An interesting proposal for older children may be a guided walk combined with an urban game or culinary workshops with baking traditional cookies.

How to plan a trip with Santa Natura?

It is easiest to reach Łowicz from the Santa Natura Hotel by car – the trip takes about 25 minutes. On-site, you will find parking near the market, museum, and cathedral. If you enjoy quiet, intimate trips with a hint of history, Łowicz will be a pleasant variation during your stay in the vicinity of the Bolimów Landscape Park. You can also ask at the hotel reception about current cultural events – sometimes weekend thematic fairs, open-air concerts, or folk dance shows are organized.

What is worth seeing in Łowicz? Summary

Łowicz is not a city for long sightseeing tours but rather for a relaxed day with a coffee break and a short walk. For many Santa Natura guests, this lack of haste is the biggest advantage – and with this approach, it’s worth discovering the nearest surroundings as well. And Łowicz, though unassuming, can surprise – with its history, colors, and atmosphere.
